Our Firms History
Schott Mauss & Associates was founded in 1997 when Max Schott purchased the law firm previously owned by Robert Pratt, a pioneer of Iowa Social Security Disability law who left the practice to serve as a federal judge from 1997 to 2023.
Max, the son of a northwest Iowa farmer, had watched his father struggle to work after injuring his back in a farm accident. When his father applied to the Social Security Administration for disability benefits, he was denied. Seeing his father’s story spurred Max to make a difference for the many other Iowans who have been denied benefits in the years since.
Max grew the firm, continuing to specialize in Social Security Disability and workers’ compensation cases. In 2007, he sold Max Schott & Associates to Jean Mauss, who renamed the firm Schott Mauss & Associates. Jean sold the firm in 2017 to its present owners: Gretchen Jensen, James Neal, Matt Milligan, and Shannon Schuehle. The firm’s four partners work together with a staff that includes two associate attorneys and a number of other associates and assistants.
Over the years, the firm has maintained the characteristics of a farmer’s son, working to assist anyone in need who calls.
